Engraving
Many engravers say their work is hand engraved if the machine they use to trace letters or designs stamped into templates is controlled by hand. Traditionally, authentic hand intaglio engraving is a free-form artistic decoration cut into precious metal. It can be lettering, which usually is an inscription or someone's name or initials. It may also be creative designs such as floral patterns, family crests, landscapes and signatures. The process uses hand-held gravers that are pushed into the metal. In an increasingly mechanized world, very few people practice this art. It is an art form that is rapidly becoming extinct.
The most common type of engraving produced today is done by computer controlled machines or lasers. Both produce very fine work. The mediums on which computer-driven or laser engravings are done are much more varied than those upon which hand work is done. A broad range of glass and plastics are easily engraved by machines. Hand engravers always engrave on metal with gold, silver and platinum being the most popular.
Though we don't know the date the first hand engraver was employed by Jolly's, but it was probably very close to our opening in 1881. In 1908, we expanded our service department to add additional jewelers and engravers. The first machine engraver was purchased over forty years ago, and, since that time, Jolly's has offered our customers their choice of hand or machine work. Today, our hand engravers do creative work that is as fine as our best craftsmen produced a century ago. And our computer engraver personalizes most metals and glass by inscribing your choice of names, initials, inscriptions and corporate or school logos.
Since 1881, an important part of Jolly's business has been producing beautiful jewelry and silver and combining them with the artistry of world class engraving. To inscribe your family heirlooms or personalize a gift with an inscription to be cherished for generations, visit our service department at Jolly's in Raleigh's North Hills.
